Rape And Sexual Assault Of Women
The information in the section is for anyone who comes into contact with women and girls. You may have lots of experience working around violence against women, or it may be something totally new to you. You may be frantically looking up information on this issue because a woman is sitting opposite you, or you may be calmly reading through this in preparation for your work.

Whatever your situation, and how you come to be reading this information, please read it. One thing is for sure, the more open you are to hearing about sexual violence and supporting women who have experienced it, the more often you are likely to be approached. This is because sexual violence against women is very common and has long lasting effects. Given the frequency of all forms of sexual violence, it is very likely that if you come into contact with women and girls, then you will come into contact with women and girls who have been raped or sexually assaulted.

The information is divided into 4 sections:

  1. Information about Rape Crisis
  2. Effects of rape and sexual assault
  3. Key tasks when supporting women and girls
  4. Recent rape - key points

It is useful to read all of the information contained in the above sections before supporting a woman who has suffered sexual violence. There are specific sections which may be helpful in an emergency, for example Section 4 on recent rape is very useful for workers who are approached soon after an attack.
