These guidelines have been produced by the Primary Care Sexual Health Sub Group of the Sexual Health PIG and approved by the GP Sub Committee as an appropriate document for wider consultation. It is important to support the provision of high quality sexual health services within Primary Care. The guidelines are intended to guide primary care practice to achieve this aim.

Where a Practice has adequate support and resources it would aspire;

  1. To identify key members of the primary health care team who have an interest in and knowledge of sexual health issues.
  2. To identify the sexual health learning needs for all staff.
  3. To highlight Confidentiality issues to all staff with particular regard to sexual health issues.
  4. To have a clearly defined policy on the use of chaperones for intimate examinations.
  5. To be able to provide information sources for sexual health and sign post to other or specialist sexual health services.
  6. To consider the sexual health needs of specific groups (e.g.Young people, Gay men and women, older people, and disabled people).
  7. To offer support to women who have experienced domestic abuse and also to have procedures for responding to rape and sexual assault of women and men by partners or non partners.
  8. To be aware of the responsibilities in regard to termination of pregnancy as laid down by the GMC.
  9. To offer a full range of contraception methods by direct provision or referrals to specialist services.
  10. To have a policy on the provision of emergency contraception specifically addressing the time considerations.
  11. To undertake appropriate testing for and management of Chlamydia infection and ensure partner notification in line with Sign Guideline 42.
  12. To promote the provision of condoms in the community.
  13. To conduct HIV testing where clinically indicated.
