Guideline 7

To offer support to women who have experienced domestic abuse and also to have procedures for responding to rape and sexual assault of women and men by partners or non partners.

Practices need to be aware that a considerable amount of sexual activity is not consensual. The incidence of domestic abuse is such that it is likely that a significant number of female patients will be experiencing abuse and physical and mental health problems arising from it. Practices can identify ways of facilitating disclosure and. supporting women, both in the primary care setting and by advising of other organizations such as Women's Aid. The Primary Care Trust is currently developing strategic response to the Scottish Executive Guidance 'Responding to Domestic Abuse' and practices can contact the Trust Quality Advisor on 211 0250, for advice and support.

Plans are currently under way to improve the medical, forensic and support response to victims of rape and sexual assault and advice will be available shortly on the implications for primary care of this work.

Currently there is information on www.sxhealth.co.uk to help us respond to the emotional and psychological needs of victims of rape and sexual assault.
