Guideline 4

To have a clearly defined policy on the use of chaperones for intimate examinations.

To be aware of GMC guidance on the use of chaperones for intimate examinations. To discuss the use of chaperones and come to an agreement that reflects local circumstances. A written practice policy may help focus these issues. Patient choice is an important consideration and thought should be given to the clinical need for the examination. Providing explanation and obtaining consent must be achieved before examination. Consider recording the offer of a chaperone and consider delaying examinations if appropriate chaperones are not available.
